2022 Tamāhine Limited Edition

Our barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc is named after a boat called Tamāhine (or the ‘Tam’). The ship kept the North and South Island of Aotearoa-New Zealand linked for close to 36 years.

It’s a story of Marlborough’s heritage - of connecting people. But it’s also a story of determination and grit – and the ship was most famous for very rarely missing a crossing, despite seeing some vicious storms in its time.

We thought of no better way to celebrate Sauvignon Blanc and winemaking in the region than with a nod to this iconic passenger vessel. Here, we have created a magnificent barrel-fermented Sauvy B that is complex, deep, and texture-rich, with purity of fruit flavour and freshness.

Tamāhine

Translated, Tamāhine means “daughter” in Te Reo Māori - pronounced (ta-maa-hi-ne) it was the name of one of Marlborough's most iconic ferry vessels - connecting the North and South Island - the historic boat is truly one of our unsung heroes.

Winemaking

Tamāhine in crafted to express a richer side to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and is made to showcase cellaring potential.

Perfectly ripe fruit is fermented and aged for 7 months in 20% new French barrique and 80% older barrels. Light long toasting was chosen for the barrels to help create a more subtle oak influence.

Expert Opinions

2023 Vintage

95 Points (5 Stars)

Complex and sophisticated, the wine shows apricot skin, grapefruit, oatmeal and gun smoke aromas on the nose with a hint of vanilla. The concentrated palate displays outstanding focus and drive, splendidly supported by saline texture and vibrant acidity. Superbly structured and persistent. At its best: now to 2033.
